What You Need To Know About Digital Multimeters

A digital multimeter is a device used for measuring volts, amps and ohms. It is a hand-held, compact and incredibly versatile tool that is preferred more than the traditional analog meters. Beside the standard needle and gauge, the digital multimeter also has a LED display which shows the measurement readings. The digital multimeters are more accurate than the analog meters, simply because they are equipped with many innovative functions. The more expensive the multimeter, the more features it offers. However, all models measure the three basic currents: volts, amps and ohms.

These electronic devices are used for testing and analyzing electronic circuits. The digital multimeters are used for testing batteries and diodes, measuring capacities, resistance, etc. A basic digital multimeter comes with a digital circuit, which measures the current. But the digital circuits consist analog components, which means that the continuous signals need to be converted into digital. The digital multimeters convert these signals by transforming the input signal into a voltage. Compared to the the old analog meters, the new digital multimeters are very easy to use. For more convenience and improved accuracy, the multimeter displays information in decimal points and numeric digits.

The digital multimeters are essential tools for many applications. They are especially used when a specific electric problem needs to be solved, which means they are widely used in the construction industry, automotive industry, computer industry, engineering industry, and any other industry sector that involves electrical work. The most important specification to consider when purchasing a digital multimeter is the operating resistance, also known as impedance. Since the digital multimeter is a part of the circuit that is being tested, the current in that circuit is highly impacted.

The range is very important thing that you need to be considered when buying a digital multimeter. Having a digital multimeter with proper range is very important if you need accurate measurements. For example, when testing a small capacity battery of 12V, a digital multimeter with a range up to 25 volts will provide more accurate measurements than the one with a range setting of 0 to 500V. The newer digital multimeters come with automatic range setter, which automatically sets proper range for each circuit.

Another important factor to consider is the maximum reading capacity of the digital multimeter. In other words, this is the maximum amount of current the multimeter is capable to measure. Usually, the maximum reading capacity is shown on the front part of the multimeter.
