What You Need To Know Before You Buy A Compressor

Air-Compressor

Air compressors are machines designed to create compressed air to power pneumatic tools such as paint sprayers, nailers, impact wrench, staplers etc. Technicians and contractors commonly use pneumatic tolls for automotive repairs, bodywork, framing, roofing and finish works, while homeowners tend to use a compressor for small-scale home projects and lighter applications such as inflating tires and sports equipment.

A compressor is a versatile machine which is available in a variety of designs, and every compressor is used for specific applications. When on the market for air compressors, several factors need to be closely considered in order to choose the right model for your application. You need to pay attention on the following things:

1. Why you need a compressor? If it is just for occasional small-scale home projects, then less expensive models will do the job. But if you need a compressor for heavy-duty applications, then a professional model with more powerful motor and lager air tank is recommended.

2. Where you will use the compressor? Determine whether the compressor will stay on your workshop, or you will need to move it depending on your project location. Be aware of your needs, since smaller models can be easily transported, but do not provide sufficient power.

3. Piston-type compressors or portable air compressors, which one to choose?

  • Piston-type compressor – This type of compressor is designed with tanks that store the compressed air. The pressure settings can be adjusted according to your needs, and it is available in two versions: single-stage and two-stage compressor. The single stage compressor is equipped with one piston which compress and delivers air to the storage tank. This compressor is suitable for home users. The two-stage compressor is equipped with two pistons which compress and deliver air to the storage tank. The first piston is responsible to compress and push the air through a check valve to the second piston. The second piston compress the air further, pushing the air into the storage tank. This type of compressor is commonly used for commercial heavy-duty applications.
  • Portable air compressor – This compressor doesn’t come with storage tank. Therefore, in order to supply air, it must run continuously. It is perfect for powering small spray guns, glue guns, caulk guns and to inflate tires and sports equipment.

4. Electric or gas powered compressor?

  • The electric powered compressor is the most common type which is generally used in areas with steady electrical supply.
  • The gas powered compressor is a perfect alternative for the electrical model, especially when electricity is unavailable or it is limited.

5. How much horsepower? As long as the compressor meets your airflow requirements, horsepower shouldn’t matter. But normally, the higher horsepower motors are capable of carrying a heavier workload.

6. Oil-free vs. oil lubricated compressors. An oil-free compressor requires less maintenance and offers a great performance for most noncommercial applications. On the other hand, the oil-lubricated compressor requires regular oil change, and it is recommended for industrial applications.
