Pallet Jack Safety – What You Need To Know

Pallet jack is used for lifting and moving loads from one point to another. They ease the work which would generally require more than one person minimizing the toughness of certain task while also saving valuable time. Even though this material handling equipment looks harmless, when operating with pallet jacks you should make sure you are equipped with the right safety equipment including gloves, steel capped boots and safety eye-wear. Here is what you need to know about pallet jack safety.

Do not pull the pallet jack – Instructions are quite simple: when the load is on the stretcher, push do not pull. The strain on your back, wrist, arms and shoulders is tremendous and pulling may cause back injuries. Pallet jack is designed to be pushed and not to be pulled by one or both arms. When pulling the jacks, you are using your back more than your legs, what makes you more susceptible to back injuries. By pushing the load, you actually keep the spine straight and use the larger and stronger bones and muscles in your legs to provide the force needed to move the load.

You can push more than you can pull – Have you ever seen a person pulling a car stuck in the snow? Of course not. You have seen a person push, but not pull. This is because we are stronger when we push the load with the legs, which is the same as lifting with legs rather than with your back. Unfortunately, many workers pull pallet jack because they do not think about the body mechanics. Remember, pulling should be used only to position the jack for moving not for actually moving it around.

Pushing gives you more control – It is much easier on the arms and back if you push the load. It takes a little practice but if you push the load you’re using less effort and is easier on your body, shoulders legs, arms and lower back. You can maintain and have much more control over the load and the pallet jack by pushing it. You can maneuver/steer away from obstacles much easier when pushing than when pulling, and can also stop faster when required. It is good to put this in a written form for your employees and have them sign guaranteeing they understand it.
